Hello everyone! *waves*
I think it’s about time I introduced myself to the curious, so in case you’re one of the aforementioned, here is some information about your lovely Axis Admin. ( Note: there is no format to follow for introductions/greetings, so to whomever’s reading and thinking of introducing themselves, don’t feel pressured to share as much as I did if you’re not comfortable with it ).
Name: Stephanie ( “Steph” is my usual nickname, and on this board I’ll also respond to “Germany”, “Deutschland”, and “Ludwig” )
Gender: Female
Age: 25
Current Residence: Washington State, U.S.A.
Top 4 favorite Hetalia characters: Germany ( of course! ), Russia, England, Lithuania
Favorite Hetalia pairings: Well, our Lithuania and Russia have convinced me that Russia/Lithuania with a healthy dose of Baltic abuse and Stockholm Syndrome is the recipe for epic win , and I’ll admit that I *do* like the dynamics of Russia/America ( twisted as that is! ), but aside from that there really aren’t any pairings I strongly like or dislike. I don’t strongly ship Germany with anyone, but if I had to pair him with someone, I would go for either Italy or my interpretation of Israel.
Bio: Let’s see…I was born and raised in America, but my parents were fond of playing “Musical States” when I was growing up and dragged me halfway across the country between Washington and Iowa at least 3 times, so as a result I ended up with a very general American accent and am just as likely to call “pop” “soda”, and a “couch” a “deveno” or “sofa”. ( Incidentally, my accent is very similar to Alfred’s in the dub they just released ). Mostly I’ve lived in Washington and Iowa, but I also spent a few years in Oregon, and I’ve been through and spent the night in just about every state west of the Mississippi. The redwood forest is beautiful and mystical. Oregon has some lovely beaches. I’ve only been east of the Mississippi twice: once to visit a family’s member’s grave in Illinois, and once for a plane layover in New York City ( I didn’t leave the airport ).
I’ve also only been out of the country twice: once when I was little we visited Canada on a field trip and I stayed for all of two hours ( such a short time! Though the ferry ride was fun ), and once in 2005 when I visited a dear friend of mine for a wonderful 2-week-long European tour, in which I visited Scotland, England, and France. The European tour was quite the experience: I got to visit Loch Ness, The Tower of London, Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the Musée du Louvre just to name a few sites! I’d love to visit again in the near future and stay longer. ~
On the education front, I have an AA degree and am only a few courses away from a BA in cultural anthropology. Like many students I experimented with other majors a few times before finding my true calling: at first I majored in English, then biology, so I have a fairly strong background in those areas as well. But then I took a cultural anthropology class that completely opened my eyes and changed my entire perception of the world, so now I have been pursuing that passionately. There are SO many other cultures and lifeways out there it blows the mind. Many of them are very, very different from the U.S., which I used to think was just like everywhere else. Some of the smaller-scale societies that I find particularly fascinating are:
~ The Aka forest foragers of the Central African Republic
~ The Yanomamö tribe of Brazil/Venezuela
~ The Trobriand Islanders of Papua New Guinea
I could go on, but I don’t want this intro to end up being a giant. ^^;
I’m aiming to study abroad in Russia this winter with our Ivan player, who happens to be my roommate and close friend. I’m also hoping to get further along in my Russian studies before I go, because as it sits I am currently only functional in the English language. I can read Russian okay and I know some of the grammar and words, but I seriously need to expand my vocabulary so that I can do more than basic greetings and talk about food . As for other languages, I know a tiny, tiny bit of French, and a handful of Spanish and German words and phrases. Pathetic, I know, but then, absolutely no importance was placed on learning a second language when I was growing up and going to school, and I was always around people who only spoke English, so until recently learning another language was fairly low priority for me.
A million times I wish I had been exposed to other languages sooner….that would have probably made them easier to learn. xD
I first found Hetalia a few months ago when I was doing a search on Deviantart for drawings/pictures of German Shepherds. Oddly enough, those keywords turned up some Hetalia fanart, and I noticed that it appeared that the nations were personified. So I did some more readings, found the webcomics, found the anime, and voila! A love was born. ^^
A small secret of mine is that I’m actually quite a bit like Ludwig in terms of personality: I also tend to take things too seriously, go OCD on cleaning, do things “by the book” ( though not as obsessively as he does ), and keep everything as neat orderly as I can ( I alphabetize my games and movies, and get upset if the towels in the cupboard aren’t all arranged perfectly from largest to smallest with the folded ends facing outward, but I am not that finicky about much else ). Culturally, I am more like a German or a Russian than anything else, which….has put me in some very amusing situations in my time.
Er…you could say I have a special affection for Ludwig. ^^ A lot of times he’s thinking along the same lines I would be if I were in his situation. I’ll admit that I also like the way he looksespecially in certain uniforms.
I find most of history fascinating, but especially WWII and Germany’s role in it. I will watch just about anything I can get my hands on pertaining to that period. Favorite WWII movies of mine include “Defiance”, “Schindler’s List”, “Valkyrie”, and “Inglorious Basterds”.
Did I mention I’m also interested in the Red Baron of WWI? I am. Not that I’m condoning killing ( even in wartime) at all, but if half the things I read were true he was an amazing pilot.
Gah, this ended up being monstrous anyway. Oh well.
